A California resident reported that “Alex” contacted them through WeChat. After some conversation, Alex convinced the resident to move their conversation over to WhatsApp, and they developed a relationship. At some point, Alex encouraged the resident to invest in crypto assets and provided step-by-step instructions through screenshots how to open an account on a crypto exchange. Alex also introduced the resident to a friend named “Summer” who said she could teach the resident how to invest in crypto assets for short-term gain.
